Whole Wheat Buns

Baking is my hobby and love how therapeutic it is for me ever since I lost my dad. 🙁 It helps me keep the negative vibes at bay. I have baked burger buns before with all purpose flour, all purpose flour + whole wheat flour but this time I wanted to try with just whole wheat flour. Since the gluten content is less in whole wheat flour compared to all purpose flour, it’s always a challenge to bake with whole wheat flour. This was my maiden attempt and I loved the end product. This recipe is fool-proof  and I’m looking forward to make masala flavored buns and some other sweet/savory bus. Alrighty, here’s how I made it. If you’re a  vegetarian/vegan, I’m sorry to disappoint you because this recipe has egg & milk. You can try without these or may use a substitute. I’ll update the recipe if I try egg-free version or if any of you have tried, let us know. You will need
  1. Whole wheat flour – 1 cup + 2 tbsp extra for dusting
  2. Egg- 1
  3. Milk- 1/4th cup
  4. Yeast- 1/4 tsp
  5. Sugar- 1 tsp
  6. Salt- a pinch
  7. Oil- 2 tbsp
  8. Butter- to spread on the bun
  • Add the yeast and sugar to lukewarm milk and let it froth.
  • Mix flour and salt in a big bowl and add egg to it.
  • Add yeast mixture to this and mix well until the dough comes together.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead well for 10 mins until the dough is soft and smooth.
  • Place the dough ball in a oiled bowl and cover it with damp towel and let it proof for an hour.
  • You will see the dough doubled in size, punch it down and shape them into balls.
  • Make sure they are shaped evenly without even a single crack.
  • Cover with damp towel and proof for 30 mins.
  • Pre-heat the oven to 400 deg F.
  • Bake the buns for 15 mins in the middle rack.
  • Spread some butter over the buns and let it cool down for 15 mins before you slice it.

  1. Hello,
Can you please let me know the substitute for egg? I would like to make it eggless since we are vegetarian.
