Spinach Dal Khichdi in Instant Pot

Long time, no IP recipes!! In fact not much recipes off late. The reason is I’m so so lazy these days that I hardly cook anything great but even if I do I’m lazy to take pictures! 😀 So I planned to make dal and rice yesterday but got so lazy that I dumped everything in IP and made dal khichdi. 😛 And it turned out so good especially on a cold winter night, this is such a heavenly comfort food! I usually make khichdi/dal with moong dal but I ran out of it and made with toor dal and loved it. If you don’t have a Instant pot, make the same thing in pressure cooker or rice cooker. Alright, here’s how I make it. Check out other Instant Pot recipes here. You will need
  1. Toor dal- 1 cup
  2. Rice- 1.5 cup
  3. Onion- 1 big, sliced
  4. Tomato- 3, diced
  5. Green chili- 6, slit length wise
  6. Ginger-garlic paste- 1 tsp
  7. Turmeric powder- 1/3 tsp
  8. Salt- to taste, I added around a lil more than 2 tsp
  9. Oil or ghee- 2 tsp
  10. Water- 6 cups
  11. Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
  12. Spinach- 1/2 bunch
  13. Hing/asafoetida- a pinch
METHOD
  • Click on ‘saute’ mode, Add oil to the inner pot, add cumin seeds and once that sizzles add in onions and green chilies.
  • Once onions are soft, add in ginger-garlic paste and mix well.
  • Add in tomatoes, spinach and add turmeric powder and hing to it and mix well.
  • Click on ‘off’ and add in washed rice and dal to it.
  • Add in salt and water and mix well.
  • Close and secure the lid and turn the valve to ‘sealing’ and click on ‘rice’ mode.
  • Once done, release the pressure naturally and open and mix for one last time.
  • Add a dollop of ghee and serve hot!

  1. Trying this out. Just got the new 7-in-1 beast and wondering if the rice mode is supposed to be on “low-pressure” or “high pressure”?
